Although it will take some time to take full advantage of the benefits of forum research, it will be time well spent. You will not only learn more about your market, you will also become part of a community, and this will enhance your business success.
Locating forums within your market
It’s actually quite simple to find forums within your market. You can simply go to a search engine, like Google.com, and type in your market subject area plus the word “forum.” So, if you’re selling homemade dog food recipes, you would simply type in the words “homemade dog food recipes forum.” You will get a list of forums that are at least somewhat related to your target market area. Click on a few of these links and browse through the forums. If you find that they are a good match for your target market, bookmark them for future reference.
Once you’ve located a number of good forums in your target market, you will want to go back to each site and register as a user. This is usually free, and it shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes. Registering allows you to post your own messages in the forums. This will allow you to begin communicating with your market to learn more and to become part of that community. This is important for establishing yourself as an expert in your market.
Learning from your market community
As you visit these forums, you should be taking notes. Read posts to find out exactly what members of this market community are searching for. They are usually very clear about problems they are facing, so you may learn how to better promote your own product. Also, notice what other products and services are being discussed.
