Preventing Hair Loss By Cutting It

I have male pattern hair loss, and I am not excited about it. My wife thinks it makes me look distinguished, but personally I think it makes me look just plain bald, or should I say balding as there remains a lot of thin hairs. I guess what I need is a hair loss solution or some kind of hair loss treatment. Perhaps what I am really looking for is a hair loss remedy.

Oh I have read about hair loss shampoos that you can use every day, and if you do then maybe after three months or so your own hair grows back. The problem with them is that they cost a lot of money, and you have to continue to use them or your hair just falls out again. And I am not sure but what they have side affects. I mean, if you are using a hair loss medication to grow hair, isn’t it a potent medicine?

I am not sure I want a hair transplant. First of all, unless done properly, they look like a horror film on steroids. Have you ever seen the little plugs some people used to have? It looked like cheap dolls’ hair. Second, they too are very expensive.

Wigs and toupees are out because they are too hot, and can end up with improper treatment looking like some kind of animal crawled up on your head and died.

So far my hair loss solution has been to cut my hair real short. That way people may not notice the difference between very thin hair and very short hair. I haven’t started shaving my head yet like some of my younger friends do. I really don’t like the look of being completely bald, so I probably won’t try that.

I used to enjoy long hair, but with the thinning on top, it just doesn’t look right, at least to me. I suppose I should try some of the modern hair regrowth products, but … they cost money. At least I have some hair left! And I grew a big beard. Yeah, people notice that instead of my hair.

Happy hair day,

How Do You Build Credit-Tips for Starting A Positive Credit History

Almost everyone needs credit. If you are renting an apartment, applying for a mortgage, applying for a car loan, or even applying for a job, you will need some type of credit history, as credit decisions are often based on your prior use of credit. If you are a young adult or are still in college, you have a unique opportunity to start building a solid credit history that can serve you for many years to come. By carefully building credit and avoiding credit mistakes, you can insure a strong credit history.

Although you may not have credit yet, you should try to get a copy of your credit report for the credit bureaus, so you can check if there is any inaccurate information. Additionally, you will want to make sure that you haven’t been a victim of identity theft, with someone using your name and trashing your credit. The three bureaus are: Equifax, Experian and Trans Union, and they can be contacted online, as well as by phone and mail.

One of the first steps to building credit is to open a checking and a savings account in your name. You may already have an account, and it is something many lenders will look at, as it show stability. If you only have a checking account, you may also want to open a savings account as well, which can be used as collateral for a secured loan, if necessary.

You should also have as many bills as you can listed in your name, such as your telephone and cellular bill. Make sure you pay all of your bills on time, as this is a major factor in your credit score. If you can, try to establish the accounts in your name only.

The next step would be to get a credit card. If you are a student, you may be bombarded by credit offers on campus. Its a good idea to get one credit card, so if you find one available with low interest rates and a low or no annual fee, you may want to apply. Student credit cards are mainly designed for people with no prior credit, and they accept a large percentage of applicants. However, don’t get more than one card, as its too easy to start running up balances, and it also looks better for your credit if you don’t open a number of accounts in a short period of time.

If you are unable to get an unsecured credit card, you still have some options to establish credit with a credit card. If you have a savings account, your bank may let you apply for a secured credit card tied to your savings account. Over time, once you make regular on time payments, you should be able to qualify for a non-secured card. You should also make sure your payments are reported to the credit bureaus, otherwise you won’t be building your credit history.

Another option is to get a co-signer. If someone has good credit, that will extend it to you, by putting their name as being jointly responsible for your limit on your card. This will help your credit history if you pay off the loan in a responsible way. If you do have a co-signer, you have a serious responsibility to make sure your payments are timely, or you will hurt their credit as well as your own.

With some foresight, it can be relatively easy to start building credit. Once you get a credit card, its important to keep the balance low, and to make regular, on time payments. The card should be used as a tool for credit building, not as a additional spending money. Over time, you credit will start to look better and better.

Schema is Only for Smart People

Schema is a Fancy Word For Learning System

Students and executives daydream over 33% of the time, cannot seem to pay attention, and get amnesia about what they read or hear within 15 minutes. Yes, really. These are neuroscientific facts not just phony headlines.

It is amazing we ever graduate school and companies are successful if everyone daydreams. Not everyone. You know the 80/20 principle (the Vital 20% and the Trivial 80%) runs the world. The only question is which division you occupy, and what to do to move into the fast-track with the successful 20%.

Google: Vilfredo Pareto, Italian economist and father of the 80/20 rule.

So What

Schema is a mental structure, (remember framework), to take information about
ourselves, others and knowledge of the world, and organize it for easy access for
memory and learning. It is a baby easy tool you place in your mind, and learn to use for decision-making.

Synonyms for schema, schemas (schemata) are: model, diagram, plan, pattern, and
structure. Derived from Greek < form.

If you ever want to be recognized as an expert and genius in your specialized area,
you need to create or steal a bunch of schemas and insert them in your brain.

Why

Schemas are mental-filters for thinking about problems and having a system to
almost instantly make your decisions. They are roadmaps to process (comprehend) and make the best choices. Best of all, they integrate both your left and right brains
for conscious and nonconscious input, using both cognitive analysis and intuition.

Huh

In reading you use either Random Spacing (unorganized) and slow as molasses, or Specific Guidance, (an organized system) and mental schema for students and executives to ace their learning and career.

In learning new skills you use one or more of these three methods:

1. Learning through concentrated Observation
2. Trial-and-Error
3. Reading or listening about the new skill

We use these schemas for speed learning:

a) Fistnoting (seven questions to ask and answer for powerful
learning in school and career).

b) Skim-Scan-Screen (how to ace exams, presentations and
interviews).

c) Pacing strategies for speed reading (Z for Zorro, Triple Chunking,
Indenting and Underlining.

d) StressBusting (acupressure and mudras) for instant relaxation.

e) Einstein Memory System (Peg and Link method) to double your
long-term memory.

f) Extra-ocular muscles training for peripheral vision improvement.

Other Kinds of Schemas

Smart people who are lazy at heart have schemas implanted in their prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex and insula, through practice and experience.

The more you use your schemas, the better they work and make you look like a genius decision-maker.

Google: Dr. Dorothy Tse, Science, 4.06.07. The schema smart rats use. Rats get more of what they want by internalizing schemas, and so do smart
Homo sapiens. Consider these five you already use.

1. People-schemas: how you judge the usefulness and truthfulness of folks you meet. What do you look for? What are your standards? Is it based on thinking or feeling?

2. Self-schemas: the rules we set for ourselves to make decisions of Go/No-Go.
What causes you to decide to buy or walk away, say yes or no to a request?

3. Social-schemas: your beliefs through your filters about the world in general.
Who will you vote for? How will you invest your money? Who will you
choose for your Significant-Other? What to expect of your kids?

4. Prototypes: an idealized image we have of what we want in others.
What do you look for in hiring or firing a staffer? What is your idea of
beauty or handsomeness? What do you want in a new house? New career?

5. Role-Schemas: a system telling you how to act and how others react in life.
How do you dress, talk and feel at a party? In the office, are you formal or
casual? What makes you admire or hate someone on-sight? What kind of
folks or situation disrupt your comfort-zone? How do you feel about people
who curse? Do labels like liberal or conservative affect your emotions?

More Examples

What are your mental images of the Police, Firemen, Actors and Stockbrokers?

Your answer is based on your personal experiences, education and even
economic level. When you meet or even reading about these kinds of folks, your brain switches on your appropriate schema. Only then do you know
what to think and feel about these role-filling folks.

Some of us see Cops as the enemy, who enforce the often erratic rules of
the Establishment without rhyme or reason. Others think of their Uncle
Manny who was a desk sergeant at the 73rd precinct and loved to help
people in trouble.

Imagery

Mental images automatically appear on the movie-screen of your mind,
and cause particular feelings and emotions to often decide our behaviors.
If you schema is a positive one about Cops, you will response to their request
to vote them annual raises.

If your images about stockbrokers are negative, you will ask your Congresswoman to vote for a new law to limit their activities and advice.
If you are left-brain dominant, you will use analysis and logic more than
right-brain dominant folks.

The righties will rely more on intuition and emotions to decide their personal actions and behaviors. Most of us will use both left and right brains, but one is always more dominant. Never minimize the power of your feelings and emotions to be the ultimate decision-maker, unless you monitor your brain
functions.

Schemas offer you the ability to think and react holistically, seeing the big
picture (context and framework). Random reactions produce a micro version
of Cause-and-Effect, Stimulus/Response, and Trial-and-Error. We suggest
you Go Holistic and reframe (options) your approaches to life.

Real Estate Investing’s Inner Game

Every once in a while I get an internal reminder that I am a work in progress. In this instance it was not one of those “hit you over the head with an 8 pound sledge hammer” reminders that you get when you have been particularly blind to your own faults. It was more of a little “A Ha!” that had larger implications if uncorrected. And by being aware of this quiet reminder, I hope to avoid the previously referenced sledge hammer in the near future!

The subject of my internal wake up call was driving a beautiful new black Mercedes 550S Class sedan and was waiting to make a left hand turn across my lane. The driver was female, looked like she had just gotten back from the salon, and was politely waiting for me to pass. She did nothing wrong, sat there calmly waiting for me to drive by, with her flasher on. As I drove by I thought to myself something like: “Oh boy, there goes another rich twit in her paid for …”

Whammo.

The guardian of my mind popped into my head waving his mechanical arms like the Robot in an episode of that 1960’s television series “Lost in Space.”

“Warning!” “Warning!” “Danger, Craig Higdon!!!”

For those of you too young to know the reference, I’m sure that you can find an old episode somewhere on cable TV. You won’t have to wait too long before ol’ Mr. Robot shows up to give you a demonstration.

Anyway, do you realize what my “guardian” did for me? He trounced all over a “limiting belief” and gave me a chance to correct it.

Choosing Our Beliefs

For those of you not familiar with the term “limiting belief,” I first came across it while investigating Neurolinguistic Programming, or “NLP” some years back. NLP is a study of internal and external communication processes and its effect on human behavior.

One of the things that you learn in the course of studying NLP is that in large part our behavior is governed by our beliefs … and that our beliefs are what we make them! Think about that for a moment … we chose all of our beliefs! Everything that you believe about everything was a choice that you made. You will have to take my word for it for the moment because I could fill volumes on just this aspect of NLP.

Just for fun, you might want to examine a belief or two that you have. Start with something simple like: “I believe that peanut butter is good for me.” Now ask yourself a few questions:

When did I start to believe that? What evidence do I have that makes that true? What evidence do I have that makes that not true? What do I get out of believing that? What would happen if I did not believe that?

There are more questions to ask that would help you to change a belief, but hopefully in the course of asking yourself the questions above you came to the realization that you decided to adopt that belief at sometime in the past based upon some rules, some evidence, or an experience that you had. This has some interesting implications, doesn’t it?

And what does this have to do with commercial real estate investing, commercial loans, and construction projects? Quite a bit, actually.

One of the questions that I get frequently is: “How do I get started or go to the next level in commercial real estate?” The overly simple answer to that is: “Well, first you have to believe that you can!”

Limit Those Limiting Beliefs

Let me illustrate this. I have had people who owned multiple 1 to 4 unit properties, maybe 20 to 30 units in all, ask me how to buy their first apartment building or other piece of commercial real estate. When I get that question I have to chuckle … because they already have an apartment building! It is simply broken up into smaller chunks. Granted, the mechanics of multifamily real estate are slightly different than for multiunit residential, but in this case the questioner is already a commercial real estate or “income producing real estate” investor. He just hasn’t realized it.

He doesn’t “believe” that he’s is a commercial real estate investor and has thus artificially “limited” his options for investing. He does not yet “believe” that he can invest in other types of real estate.
So let me get back to my story and my little mental guardian. I passed the nice lady in the Mercedes, saw her make her turn in the rearview mirror, and we both went our merry ways. As I drove away, I changed my thoughts about her to: “She has done well and I wish her to continue to do well.”

Because I have had a little training in NLP I was able to catch myself looping into an old belief about wealth and wealthy people and make the “change” at the time in my thinking. The experience did serve to remind me that I need to be vigilant in my “belief monitoring” and that I might want to make a personal inventory of my beliefs concerning wealth in the near future.

And if you don’t think that you have some buried beliefs about wealth and being wealthy that are working against you in your real estate investments, my friend, you are simply kidding yourself. They are all there in the daily newspapers, T.V. shows, magazines, etc. You probably can’t go 10 minutes without hearing or seeing something “bad” about making money or being “rich.” Have you ever heard the phrase “filthy rich?” Uh huh. And I’ll bet that you know a bunch of others, too.

So you need to place a guardian in your mind to sift out those limiting beliefs. This will help you with any self-sabotage you may have encountered in your life. It is not easy without the right tricks, but it is very rewarding. So as you develop your commercial real estate investment techniques, remember to focus on your inner game to manifest your outer goals.

Note: NLP is slowly being supplanted by a more powerful “technology” called Hemispherical Integration. You can find out more about it at the web site NLPLA.com.

Reverse Glass Painting, The Affordable Way To Do Reverse Glass Painting

My name is Sally, and I’m here to let you know that after 8 years of pursuing my passion, (while working a full time job) it’s so much easier than I would have expected to stain glass windows. The materials that I use to paint with are bought entirely at local art supply stores. The windows that I paint in can either be purchased used from construction companies, and I’ve never paid more than $5 for a window sash in the rough, or picked up from the side of the road where remodeling is being done, my personal form of recycling when the opportunity arises.

The work put into partially refinishing, refinishing completely, or painting can be tiresome, but isn’t it worth doing? The stained window, or reverse glass painting that you will end up with will be so worth having!

When you see something that really strikes You as being beautiful or meaningful, you already have your starting point. What was it? Cala lilies, a light house, a grove of birch trees? Maybe a bunch of grapes? All of or any of these would be an excellent starting point. Keep in mind that this is going to be the main subject of the reverse glass painting, and if it’s going to be a stained window, it doesn’t need ANY background, just the beautiful part. That’s what you want, right?

The next thing you’ll need is nothing more than a basic sketch of your subject that is at least somewhat close to being the same size of the window sash, or pane of glass that you want to work on. Maybe you had something pretty on a calender, or in one of your own photos? Have a post sized enlargement made at the local office supply store if you don’t want to draw the sketch yourself. If you take this route, though, you will need to put mental blinders on to the small details and background.

Tape your sketch to the back side, or the viewing side of the glass.

Now, as I said earlier, the paint you will need for your project is readily available at most art supply stores. One of these paints is called liquid lead (there is no lead in the paint, it’s the texture that gives it the name.) It comes in a one or two ounce bottle with a tapered tip dispenser, that when the bottle is held upside down at an angle, and squeezed, will allow a thin strip of the paint directly on to the glass for you to form only the outline of the main subject of. As an example, if you are doing the bunch of grapes, outline only the leaves, most, but not all of them, and the grapes. Again, most of the individual grapes, but not all of them. If you outline the complete circle shape of every grape, it’s going to look like a bunch of purple or green balls run amok. With a few arcs, or partial circles added in, it will look a lot more like grapes. The one ounce bottles of colors were probably right beside the liquid lead in the art supply store, so lets choose two shades of green, two shades of purple, a bottle of some kind of white, and blue will make a good background color.

After the liquid lead has dried, you can carefully drop some of the dark purple into the grape bunch area at he bottom of each of the grapes. Have a small round paint brush ready, and repeat the process, with the lighter purple at the top of each grape. Carefully the light purple into the dark with the brush. Rinse out the brush every couple of grapes, so that you don’t end up with just one purple.

When the grapes are finished, go to the leaves. a drop of the darker green at the bottom of the leaf, and a drop of light green toward the top of the leaf. Same process Push the darker green toward the lighter green, rinsing the brush every two or three leaves
When the leaves are done, you can complete the painting by filling in the background with mostly blue and a few drops of white sprinkled here and there. Be sure to let the white mix with the blue, so that you create lighter spots, and not white dots. That would be distracting.

The final step is to turn it around, remove the pattern you had taped on the glass, and admire your work. Congrats!

Your Unique Marketing Message - Tips from Obama’s “Keeper of the Message”

Meet David Axelrod: The man behind Barack Obama’s unique presidential campaign message. What’s so unique about it? It’s cutting through the political noise, getting heard around the nation and inspiring people to act.

Voters have grown numb from too many unmet promises, integrity questioning scandals and slanderous rants. The American people have tuned out this “noise,” lost confidence in their political leaders and worse, in their own ability to cause change.

The same is true in the health and healing arts field. Diet after diet and one self-help guru after another has left Americans confused and defeated by the countless failures to make any of the plans work in their life.

And like Obama, as a professional in your field, your message must also cut through the mind-numbing hype in order to be heard. And that’s just the first step. Once you’ve got their attention, you have to be able to back up what you stand for.

So, what can we learn from one of the big dogs of message crafting? In a behind-the-scenes interview in this Sunday’s New York Times Magazine written by Ben Wallace-Wells, Axelrod describes himself not as Obama’s chief political and media advisor but as “keeper of the message.”

Let’s go to school….

Lesson 1: Authenticity is how you cut through.

Axelrod has been piecing together 15 years of footage of Obama’s political life. “Most of the raw videotape he has is the banal, worn imagery of politics – Obama speaking from a podium, with the familiar, angled hand gestures, or seated and listening intently, elbows on knees.”

“There was a clip he found from Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign when the candidate told them about his work in the early 1990s as a community organizer, there was a spontaneous, sustained applause.” Axelrod says, “You know, we hadn’t thought that was an important part of his bio, but people really responded to the fact that Barack gave up corporate job offers to work in the community.”

In an industry where the “customer,” in this case voters, are numb to uber polished political performers and slick messages, this peek into Obama’s community values hits home. It’s refreshing and real.

How can you be more authentic in your message? What aspects of your personality, values and background could add meaning and depth to how you present yourself? What is different and new about you and your approach to your work? Be willing to drop the “sage on the stage” vibe and get real with your audience.

Lesson 2: Tell me a story.

“Axelrod says that the way to cut through all the noise is to see campaigns as an author might, to understand that you need not just ideas but also a credible and authentic character, distinct politics rooted in personality.”

“One of the reasons Bush has succeeded in two elections,” Axelrod says, “is that in his own rough-hewn way, he has conveyed a sense of this is who I am, warts and all.”

An important question to answer in your marketing is, “Why are you doing this?” This adds a good dose of the critical “know, like and trust” factor.

Did you overcome your own health concerns? Were you affected by the traditional medical system in a way that left you wanting something different or more effective? Did something happen to you that left you changed and inspired to do this work? Tell your potential clients a compelling story and people will listen.

Lesson 3: Drop the formulaic campaigns that your competitors are using.

“After the consecutive presidential losses of Al Gore and John Kerry, patrician candidates who ran ill-fitting ‘people versus the powerful’ campaigns designed for them,” [rather than as a reflection of who they were] many Democrats began to suspect the part of what was wrong with the party was its formulaic consultants.”

“The party has suffered,” Axelrod says, “from a Wizard of Oz syndrome among Washington political consultants who tend to come to candidates and say: ‘I have the stone tablets! You do what I say, and you will get elected.’ And they fit their candidates into their rubric.”

Pricing, marketing and presenting your services like everyone else in your field only serves to make you blend in. Don’t try to fit in, fit out. When you’re willing to take a stand for what you want to bring to the world, you become very attractive to clients that truly value who you are and what you’re here to do.

Lesson 4: Get endorsements.

According to Axelrod, “when you’re breaking barriers and asking voters to do something they haven’t done before – vote for an African-American for governor, senator or president – it’s very helpful to have third party authentification, newspaper endorsements or institutional support, to encourage them to go there.”

You can do the same. Client testimonials that represent the results you offer, articles published in local and national publications, corporate endorsements and a written vote of confidence from a former instructor or director of your alma mater, or well-known advisor all serve to encourage your potential clients to take a chance on your approach.

In the health & healing arts, you are up against your client’s long history of failing to consistentently self-care. Endorsements can tip the scale in your favor.

Lesson 5: Create a movement.

Obama’s campaign message reflects and embraces the constant attention paid to the historic nature of the candidacy itself. And not by apologizing for it or ignoring it. Instead, author Wallace-Welles writes, the message is shared through “the optimism, the constant presence of the candidate’s biography, the combination of crusading message of reform with the candidate’s natural pragmatism, the insistence that normal political categories do not apply, the use of the symbolism that accompanies the candidate’s race.”

Is your target audience tired of the traditional approaches in your field? Can you create a bigger meaning behind their hiring you? Is it time to take their health and life into their own hands? Create a movement around your message and your clients will not only adopt your strategies for better living, they’ll also share your work with urgency.

Lesson 6: Be the message.

The author writes, “Axelrod says of John Edwards 2004 presidential campaign didn’t falter because of the message, ‘which was pretty good and it got us pretty far.’ Instead he points to Edwards: ‘I have a whole lot of respect for John, but at some point the candidate has to close the deal and – I can’t tell you why – that never happened with John.”

Your message alone will not expand your practice. You must back it up with action, follow-through and a presence that matches. It will get people to listen to you, but from there, it’s all you.

So invite people to work with you. Step up and say you can deliver what your potential client wants. Make a bold statement. Offer a guarantee. Do something that gets you on the court and playing to make the championships.

Here’s to your expansion.

Treating Dyslexia

Dyslexia has become a term that most people are familiar with. They believe it means reversing letters and numbers, which is true, but in my work with children I have found that it encompasses so much more than just reversals. What I have primarily found is that these children are highly intelligent, yet their world cannot seem to hold still for them. Can you imagine your world floating or moving? That is what these kids deal with daily. Can you imagine your world changing daily, hourly, or by the minute? That is what is on these poor kids’ plates. And yet, we ask them to sit still, read, do math, mind and follow directions, and the list goes on.

There are many forms of dyslexia. The dyslexia most people think about involves reading and reversing letters. Recently I was working with a dyslexic student and told her mom that she was having a hard time reading the silent e. I gave her some activities to help her. The next day the mom called me. The student had indeed inherited her dyslexia from Dad. When Mom was telling Dad about the silent e, He replied, “Well, that’s because we don’t see it.” How simple is that? Can you imagine not being able to see a letter right there in front of you, a letter so important that it can change the sound and meaning of a word? Can you imagine how stupid you would feel if you read the word site as sit? How about if you did it in front of your reading group or the entire class? How about if your teacher isn’t kind and makes you feel stupid in front of the whole class when you make a mistake such as this? It happens daily.

Dyslexia may show up in math, writing, handwriting, or spelling. I have worked with kids who could read so well it would amaze you, but give them some math problems, and they fall apart. Also, they may not reverse letters or numbers. They may have an auditory form of dyslexia. Some of these kids can’t focus because they hear the computer whirring away but only hear every third or fourth word the teacher might say.

And we wonder why these kids are failing. We wonder why many of them become behavior problems or retreat into a silent, strange world. I think I might have to get up and move around the classroom if it couldn’t hold still. I can guarantee you that a teacher wouldn’t sit for hours on end if she had this problem. And the sad truth is that these kids are probably smarter than the straight A student whose mom is bragging to you at soccer practice. If you are the parent of a dyslexic child, you may have given up or you may think your child is dumb. That bragging can get pretty old.

Dyslexia can be treated. I don’t know if there is a cure, but I do know this. I have had students who write backwards or in mirror form, who couldn’t read or write, who were failing school and life. After working with these kids, most have been on the Honor Roll or close to it. The most severe dyslexic student I have ever had was misdiagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Her mother was told by the school to plan on institutionalizing her when she grew up because she had no future ahead of her. She was 9 years old and couldn’t read or write. She couldn’t do first grade math. She is now reading, writing, and doing math. No, she is not yet on grade level, but I have no doubt that within a year she will be close. My first indication that she had a world that wouldn’t hold still was how she held her head. You see, it was tilted to the side constantly. Each week when she comes, that is one of my biggest victories. Her head is no longer tilted, which means her world is starting to settle down. She can now settle down and get on to the business of learning. I am convinced that she is intelligent. I am convinced that she does not have Asperger’s Syndrome. I am convinced that as we work on spatial issues and visual and auditory processing activities as well as brain retraining that this child will lead a normal life. She will be reading and writing like any other kid her age.

The progress each child has will differ. I have had kids show huge growth in a few weeks. Other kids will show nothing and then one week they seem to know everything. Some kids will just plod along at a steady pace. Do not give up on them. Keep the kindness and patience alive for them, because you are all they have to fight this battle. I usually work with a student once a week for a year before the student is able to function in a classroom and have decent grades and test scores. I have had some severe students for two years. The students who make the most progress get daily help. Once a week isn’t enough to lick this thing.

Most parents are relieved when they actually get a diagnosis. However, they must understand that if a student has dyslexia, then he won’t always see a b as a d. It may be a p or a q another day. This just seems to drive parents nuts. They had just gone over the b the day before and now the kid is saying it is a p! Keep in mind that their worlds are not constant. Not much is constant in their brains, and yet you will hear some of the biggest bits of wisdom you have ever heard come out of their mouths. There truly is intelligence in there. If you have a problem you can’t seem to find the answer to, find a dyslexic child or adult and ask his opinion. You will be astounded at his insight. These are the most intuitive kids I have ever met, and most have a sense of humor that is so advanced that they are one step ahead of you.

So, how do you know if your child has dyslexia? Following are some general symptoms of dyslexia that can serve as a guide for the steps you need to take if your child has these symptoms.

· Slow, labored inaccurate reading of single words in isolation
· Slow, choppy oral reading while ignoring punctuation
· Becomes visibly tired after reading for a short time
· Poor reading comprehension
· When reading, frequently reverses, inverts, or transposes letters or words
· Substitutes similar looking words, even if it changes the meaning of the sentence, such as sunrise for surprise
· Omits or changes suffixes, such as need for needed
· Spelling errors of reversals, inversions, or transpositions
· Continually misspells sight words or misreads sight words
· Written work shows signs of spelling uncertainty
· Misspells even when copying something from the board or from a book
· Unusual pencil grip when writing, often with the thumb on top of the fingers – a fist grip
· May hold the pencil lower or higher than normal
· The pencil grip is so tight that the child’s hand cramps
· Writing letters is a slow, labored, non-fluent chore
· Writes letters with unusual starting and ending points
· Has great difficulty getting letters to sit on horizontal lines
· Unusual spatial organization of the page. Words may be widely spaced or tightly pushed together. Margins are often ignored
· Has an unusually difficult time learning and using cursive writing
· Writes extremely short sentences
· Takes an unusually long time to write
· Displays very poor mastery of punctuation as well as grammar, syntax, and suffixes
· Misspells many words
· Has nearly illegible handwriting
· Uses space poorly on the page
· Misses many errors in written work even when proofreading has been attempted
· Left-right confusion, mainly showing up in handwriting and math
· Difficulty in directionality – confuses north and south or the meaning of words such as right – left
· Tying shoelaces is difficult
· Difficult time writing capital cursive letters
· Long division, fractions, and memorizing multiplication tables is difficult
· Touch typing is difficult
· Learning science and history facts is difficult
· Concepts of time and calendars are difficult
· Disorganized personal space
· Loses many personal items such as clothing, watches, papers, books, shoes

If your child has many of these symptoms, he may be dyslexic. A test is a good place to start to find out for sure. Or, you can just assume that this is his life and move on from there.

So, how do we still the waters that churn continually in a dyslexic child’s mind? For starters, brain exercises must come into play. To calm these waters the brain must become balanced. Ear eights, eye eights, cross crawls, magic eights, and mirrors are exercises I use regularly with the dyslexic child. (You can find these exercises at www.learning-aids.com – just look for the free Quick Start Kit) Martial arts is wonderful for these children due to the constant crossing of the midline and visualization of moves and poses.

Next, I work on spatial and visual processing. I have found that most of these kids are having a difficult time processing in their visual field. Eighty percent of what we take in is visual, so I always start here. Usually their eye muscles are weak, so I patch an eye and do the star eye exercises and repeat them on the other eye. I work on strengthening eye muscles. I have them work on spatial skills as well. Listen and draw is a great exercise I use for dyslexic children, as it encompasses all three avenues of learning. It is amazing how these kids perceive the world.

Then, I work on auditory and fine motor skills. I have yet to work with a dyslexic child who didn’t have fine motor skills problems. I am to the point where I can almost diagnose a kid after a few minutes. This thing is real, and it seems to be an epidemic. Getting these kids to write is one of the most difficult things I do. We start slowly with other exercises to get their hands and brains to work together. I always have these kids learn cursive, as it is difficult to have a reversed letter with cursive and it also flows with the brain. Manuscript is choppy and it does not flow. It actually slows these kids down. Cursive is a tough transition for them, but once it is made, then it works so much better and writing skills can then be learned.

Usually, after a few months of this, the waters do indeed calm down. They start doing things that were not possible for them before. They start seeing some successes in school. Reading isn’t quite the chore it once was. Writing becomes easier.

Is this an over night fix? Definitely not. It usually takes about a year for me to get a kid with dyslexia to be functional in a classroom and on grade level. And, that is with the parent’s help. Daily exercises are important. It took me twice as long to get a dyslexic girl up to speed because her parents weren’t willing to do eye exercises at home. But, she is in junior high school now and doing well. It just takes time and patience.

Eat and Drink - And Host A Fun Dinner Party

When Bridget Jones, the heroine of Helen Fielding’s hilarious novel Bridget Jones’s Diary, invited friends home for dinner, she served them blue soup (courtesy blue string that she had used to bind the celery). This was, of course, after she had planned an elaborate three-course dinner involving shepherd’s pie and souffle and other such delights. And therein lies one of the keys to holding a fun dinner party - don’t bite off more than you can chew!

A dinner party is meant to be an occasion for joy. What good is it when it leaves you an emotional and physical wreck from the strain of too much cooking, not enough breathing, and too much worrying? An easy way to ensure a fun dinner party is to remember some of the best dinner parties that you have attended. What did they have that others didn’t?

Too many people spend too much time worrying about the food and drink (will there be enough?), seating arrangements (who goes next to whom?), and such things as table linen (beige napkins or white?). That is not to say that you can ignore these matters altogether, but just that you should be able to work out some sort of balance that allows your dinner party to become a fun occasion.

A huge step in the right direction is to make a list of everything that you liked about the fun dinner parties that you have attended. That way, you know what you can do to make yours a success. Conversely, you can also list some of the things that you hated about your least favorite dinner parties, just so you know what not to do.

Now here are some more dos and don’ts:

-Do not wear yourself out worrying about the food. You’ll only end up cooking too much and crowding the table. Stick to two or three courses that you know you can handle well, and if you have fastidious guests, make sure you know their likes and dislikes. For instance, if a guest is on a diet, you should know what to serve him/her

-Unless it is a really fancy dinner party, don’t fuss too much about table linen, cutlery, serving dishes, etc. Stick to the basics and focus more on making the conversation around the table witty and pleasant

- Prepare all your food in advance. Nothing is worse than a host scurrying to and fro from kitchen to living room to attend to both the cooking and the guests simultaneously

-Do not invite people that you don’t like

-Ensure your guests know that they have to be there by a specific time

-Pre-plan for potentially embarrassing incidents such as a drunken guest, tension at the dinner table because the guests aren’t getting along, etc.

- If you think someone has had too much to drink, make sure s/he doesn’t have more

- Finally, if you feel you absolutely cannot handle the cooking, order your food, but make no attempts to hide that fact!
