Cyclical Stocks

Cyclical stocks cover the remaining market sectors and they typically react to a variety of market conditions. They do move independently, however, as one may be going up while another is going down. Why do we care about market sectors?

There are two important concepts with market sectors. First, by understanding the different market sectors, it is possible to find relationships between different companies. If you don’t know that one company is in the health care sector and another is in the energy sector, you might compare their earnings per share and draw conclusions that don’t apply. Second, understanding market sectors allows you to add valuable protection to your stock portfolio. By investing in a number of different stock sectors, you can build a higher level of security for your investment. For example, if you invested $11,000 only in the communications sector and it dropped by 50% you will have lost $5,500 or 50% of your investment. If you invested equally in all eleven market sectors and the communications sector dropped by 50%, you will have only lost $500 or 4.5% of your investment. While the example is simplistic, the meaning is very clear; by spreading your investments over a number of market sectors you minimize your risks from a tumble by an entire sector.

It Can Actually Help You Lose Weight - The Benefits of Walking!

With an increasingly aging population in North America, the need for a safe and effective exercise regime is needed. As the Baby Boomers approach the golden years high impact exercises like running have taken a back seat to other lower impact exercise modalities such as cycling and walking. The search for a low impact, effective, and health promoting workout can be found very easily by walking on a daily basis. As such, walking is now the most popular form of exercise among North Americans. It is a year-round, readily repeatable, self-reinforcing, habit-forming activity and the main option for increasing physical activity in sedentary populations. Walking is ideal as a gentle start-up for the sedentary, including the inactive, immobile elderly, bringing a bonus of independence and social well-being.

Walking is a rhythmic, dynamic, aerobic activity of large skeletal muscles that results in numerous benefits and minimal adverse effects. Walking, faster than customary, and regularly in sufficient quantity into the ‘training zone’ of over 70% of maximal heart rate, develops and sustains physical fitness.

Muscles of the legs, pelvis and lower trunk are strengthened and the flexibility of their joints preserved; as a result, posture and carriage may improve. Any amount of walking, and at any pace, expends energy and therefore the potential for long term weight control as a result of walking is present.

Dynamic aerobic exercise, as in walking, enhances a multitude of bodily processes that are inherent in skeletal muscle activity, including the metabolism of high density lipoproteins and insulin/glucose dynamics. Walking is also the most common weight-bearing activity, and there are indications at all ages of an increase in related bone strength. Walking is beneficial through engendering improved fitness and/or greater physiological activity and energy turnover.

There is, nevertheless, growing evidence of gains in the prevention of heart attack and reduction of total death rates, in the treatment of hypertension, intermittent claudications and musculoskeletal disorders, and in rehabilitation after heart attack and in chronic respiratory disease.

Benefits of regular walking while golfing

A study by Parkkari and colleagues investigated the potential health benefits of walking while playing 18 holes of golf among 55 sedentary men aged 48-64. After the 20-week study, the researchers found that the golfers (playing 2-3x/week) who walked while playing showed significant improvements in aerobic endurance and core endurance. In addition, they also found that walking favourably affected body composition, including reductions in weight of 1.4 kg, in waist circumference by 2.2 cm, and abdominal skin fold thickness by 2.2 cm. The golfers who walked also showed improved cholesterol and HDL/LDL levels in the blood.

Walking to prevent osteoporosis in the elderly

Because bone structure is maintained by the force of gravity (upright posture) and the lateral forces resulting from muscular contraction, weight bearing activities such as walking are better than cycling and swimming for maintaining spine and hip mineral integrity. Further, it may be safer to stay with a walking program since walking only produces forces up 1.5-2x body weight on each foot strike versus running which imposes forces of up to 3-4x body weight during each foot strike. As such, injuries are not as common in walking when compared to running.

Research has shown that as little as 2-3 hours of weight bearing exercise (ie. walking) per week may reduce the expected rate of bone mineral loss with age.

Walking to reduce cardiovascular events

Numerous studies have shown the benefits of walking in preventing cardiovascular disease. A 2002 study in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that walking on a regular basis was associated with substantial reductions in the incidence of cardiovascular events among 73,743 postmenopausal women.

Other studies displaying the inverse relationship between walking and cardiovascular events are very common including a study by Rastogi and colleagues who showed that as much as 35-40 minutes per day of brisk walking was protective for coronary heart disease.

Walking for weight loss

As previously mentioned walking is a form of physical activity, and therefore burns calories. Obviously, the amount of energy expenditure will depend on the nature and intensity of the exercise. It has been shown that for walking speeds of up to 3.5 mph the caloric expenditure is 0.77 kcal/kg/mile. Therefore, if you weigh 75 kg and walked at 4 mph, you would be burning 58 kcal/mile. Over 10 miles that would equate to 580 kcal. This number is roughly half of what you would burn if running at 7 mph.

Regardless of your speed, walking is ideal for burning fat since its intensity (<70% max) is in the zone in which fatty acids are the primary source of fuel. Again, fats are predominantly used as fuel during low-intensity, long-duration activities such as walking.

According the American College of Sports Medicine, a gradual progression is indicated from slow, to regular pace and on to 30-60 minutes of brisk (55-70% max HR) walking 3-5 days/week. These levels should achieve the major gains of activity and health-related fitness without adverse effects.

The Secret - Missing Link

The Secret is on many people’s mind. Many people have asked me—“Have you read, The Secret? It is a must read if you haven’t.” Not only have I read the book, The Secret, I have practiced the principles for decades.

The Secret principles are based on metaphysics and have been spoken of by the greatest thinkers, writers and leaders throughout time—Plato, Aristotle, Albert Einstein, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Dale Carnegie, The Power of Positive Thinking, Carl Jung; “What you resist persists.” Buddha, “All that we are is a result of what we have thought.”

“The first philosophy (Metaphysics) is universal and is exclusively concerned with primary substance. … And here we will have the science to study that which is just as that which is, both in its essence and in the properties which, just as a thing that is, it has. ….That among entities there must be some cause which moves and combines things. … There must then be a principle of such a kind that its substance is activity.” (Aristotle, Metaphysics 340BC)

‘The Secret’ is simply the metaphysics of ‘The Law of Attraction.’ However, there is a glitch in the current understanding of The Law of Attraction—a.k.a. The Secret—that can create havoc in your life.

First we need to review the up-and-down cycles of the duality issues we face on this wondrous Earth planet of third dimension.

Somewhere hidden in the recesses of your ‘contract’ is an often overlooked fine-point that is easily forgotten. “The party of the first part (you) to the party of the second part (the Universe), you hereby agree that according to the messages you send out to the Universe, so you shall reap.” This phenomenon is written in the Bible, Galatians VI (King James Version), “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Therein lies the danger. If the request you send the Universe is convoluted or conflicted, your request will be granted and you will be supplied with complete confusion. That is the up-and-down cycle. Your emotional confusion hook relies on not only being clear about which messages, requests and/or intentions you send out to the Universe, but whether they stem from a foundation of consciousness.

Therefore, you need to look inside yourself. If you have even one emotional molecule, one fearful particle or one cell stuck in a ‘lack, fear, anxiety, unworthy program,’ you will not be able to sustain the law of attraction on a positive, on-going basis. As we all know, one spoiled apple can ruin the entire barrel, so will carrying a particle, molecule or cell embedded with these self-defeating programs within your mind, body and spirit.

Many people come to me with unconscious thoughts of “I don’t deserve,” “I’m not good enough,” “I feel less than,” “Why do these bad things always happen to me?” “Why me—Poor me,” or “Self-doubt—Maybe I am not meant to be wealthy, successful, etc. etc.” These unconscious thoughts trip the sabotage downward spiral.

The dynamic of the fearful lack program is constantly at work through the third dimension, the sense that you are not worthy, not validated and not deserving to have it all. You are constantly bombarding yourself with negative messages of unworthiness from childhood and other messages you adopt from a plethora of sources. This is the reason it is challenging to sustain, maintain and continue the law of attraction in positive fulfilling ways. You absolutely deserve to have it all. However, you need to make sure you and the Universe receive a clear focused message.

Fortunately, there is a cancellation policy in your contract. Cancel all programming, all fears, all messages of lack in your consciousness, in your cells, molecules and particles. Go forward with clear intentions of how you require your life to be.

Embrace the law of attraction by sending out clear, productive messages to the Universe. Trust the process. The Universe provides all that you ask. As you make your requests, be sure you absolutely know for what and for whom you are asking. Confusion draws confusion. Clarity draws clarity.

The missing link is: Be clear about your intentions, and leave them open-ended so the Universe can work for you. Avoid the temptation to manipulate the outcome or the timing of the process. The Universe knows what to do. The Universe is generous to a fault. Stay out of the outcome so you can draw the income to you more quickly.

You can attract exactly what you want to draw on your canvas of life. You are the artist—let your heart’s desires and hands paint the picture, and trust the canvas called ‘the Universe’ will support your grandest picture. Your contract is between you and the Universe. What you agree upon is what you get. Make sure you are absolutely clear about the terms of that agreement. Be sure to review your contract and read over all the fine print. Remember you created the contract in the first place; you are your own law of attraction—stay clearly focused on your heart’s desires without doubt.

Hover Your Driver for More Consistent Drives

Today you are going to learn about “hovering your
driver.” You may be asking what is hovering the
driver and how is it going to work right?

I will explain all of that in a second, but let’s
review why the driver is so important for just a
second. As we all know, most holes require a
driver and hitting your drives straight and long
is what we are all trying to do. Doing this more
often sets you up for opportunities to score
because you are in the fairway or at least a long
way from the tee which improves your chances of
getting on in 2.

So what does hovering the driver have to do with
this? Hovering the driver behind your ball
instead of grounding the club on the ground
allows you to be more consistent with your swing
and thus will produce better drives overall.

How does this make a difference you may be
asking. Well, think about it. When you take the
club back when it is resting on the ground, you
have to actually alter your swing or the arc of
your swing a bit on the way back to the ball to
hit up on it like you are supposed to do to
maximize your drives. With the large headed
drivers and longer tees that everyone is
advocating to use, it is difficult to start at a
resting point with the club on the ground and
then changing the arc or path of your swing in
order to hit up on the ball.

Hovering the driver behind the ball before you
start at the point where you want to hit the ball
off the tee, will allow you to swing freely and
actually you will concentrate more on hitting the
ball. Think about it. When you have the club
hovering, you are really zeroing in on where you
want to hit the ball. By doing this, you are
programming your mind to just swing back and hit
the ball where the club is now and you don’t have
to do any manipulating of your swing.

Try it the next time you go out and play. I
think after you try it for a few holes, you will
see it really works.
